A symphony of light

In the north of Munich – there where the residential housing gradually morphs into the city’s industrial zone – one of Germany's most innovative lamp makers has its home. KOMOT is the name of the high-end manufactory. Here, 25 employees produce luminaires that delight design-lovers worldwide with their enigmatic height-adjustment system.

Inspired by his grandmother's spinning wheel, industrial designer Konrad Weinhuber invented a height-adjustment system for ceiling lamps in 2000. His idea: When changing the height of the lamp, the electrical cord should disappear vertically into the lamp body, where it then winds horizontally onto a spindle. The first lamp with this ingenious mechanism was showcased at the Light & Building 2002. It captivated the hearts of the admiring public and won the IF Design Award 2002.

Today, height adjustment is an integral part of the entire KOMOT lighting system. And at the heart of KOMOT is the KOS suspension lamp: a hand-blown opal-glass sphere on a fine textile cord, whose light colour and intensity can be controlled by gestures. Ingenious light guidance lends the opal-glass orb a soft white glow. Its delicate form is accentuated by the precisely dosed light, and not swallowed up by brightness as is so often the case with spherical lamps.

When the lamp is raised, the suspending electrical cord disappears discreetly into the glowing glass sphere, and re-emerges from it again when it is lowered. This option unveils a special magic when KOS is arranged in combinations of different sizes in rows, groups or clusters. The integrated height adjustment and the infinite positioning in a ceiling track allow you to create your very own lighting masterpieces in the room. Like a symphony of light, the lamps interweave their effects in an ever-changing music of the spheres, with you setting the rhythm and harmony.

Since its market launch in 2018, KOS has been sold many thousands of times across Europe. It is distributed via selected dealers around Germany and Europe. KOMOT won the German Design Award for KOS in 2019.
